IASTM (Scraping / GuaSha)

IASTM stands for instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization. The instrument can be made of stone, jade, stainless steel, or plastic. The instrument is gently scraped across the skin to encourage blood flow and oxygen supply to soft tissues, making the tissue more pliable.

The smooth hard edges and contours of the tools create resonance when they pass over fibrotic or adhered tissues, helping practitioners pinpoint areas of restriction. The scraping creates localized microtrauma, which stimulates blood flow and triggers the body’s natural healing and cellular repair processes.

Benefits of IASTM include:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improved joint range of motion
  • Improved soft tissue function
  • Increased circulation
